Sen. Joe Manchin, D-West Virginia, endorsed a potential running mate if he decides to launch a third-party presidential bid despite continuing to refuse to officially confirm whether or not he is running for president in 2024.
“Hypothetically, if I was picking my running mate, really who I would ask right now is Mitt Romney,” Manchin said during the event.
Additionally, Manchin stated that he would contemplate Ohio Republican former senator Rob Portman for the vice presidential nomination.
A luncheon at the City Club of Cleveland, which was part of Biden’s nationwide “listening tour” subsequent to his decision not to seek re-election to the Senate, witnessed Manchin deliver a number of scathing criticisms of the president.
The tour, which spanned from last month to New Hampshire in advance of the state’s inaugural presidential primary, has contributed to conjecture regarding the possibility of Manchin launching a presidential campaign as an independent or third-party candidate. His involvement with the No Labels organization’s endeavor to field a bipartisan ticket has been alleged.
